PHILOSOPHY
I trained in Glasgow, Scotland as a Podiatrist and worked for 25 years in the National Health Service in the UK in hospital out-patients departments and community clinics. Since arriving in Australia 7 years ago, I have worked mainly in Aged Care, providing services in Residential Aged Care Facilities and in the growing Independent Living Communities.
I have experience working in a hospital diabetic clinic, diabetes education, wound care, nail surgery and general podiatry. I currently provide Podiatry Services to multiple Residential Aged Care Facilities and supervise Final Year QUT Podiatry students on a weekly basis. I am an AVEO Home Care Package (HCP) Podiatry Provider in the local area and I have a current police check which also allows me to work with vulnerable adults.

Comfort Podiatry was established in 2018 to provide a home visiting service for older members of the community who are less mobile and may have disabilities, with limited access to transport and would prefer to be treated in the comfort of their own home. It is a small, friendly Podiatry Service and incorporates my 3 core values .... respect, dignity and trust.

HOME VISITING SERVICE
RESIDENTIAL AGED CARE FACILITIES
Comfort Podiatry is based in the Eatons Hill area of North Brisbane and provides a Home Visiting Podiatry Service to surrounding suburbs.

I am also an AVEO Home Care Package (HCP) Podiatry Provider - providing services to AVEO Albany Creek, Bridgeman Downs and
Aspley Court.
My passion is Aged Care. Comfort Podiatry provides a friendly, caring and professional service to residents in the relaxed and comfortable surroundings of a Residential Aged Care Facility, including dementia units, meaning less stress and no transport issues for residents. All residents are assessed yearly and high risk residents identified. Progress notes are completed onsite. Comfort Podiatry, provides an electronic handover after each visit, with a treatment summary and care recommendation for each resident treated. Visits can be tailored to suit your company's needs. ASSESSMENTS
FOOT HEALTH EDUCATION
Comfort Podiatry will carry out a full assessment during your initial consultation and a care plan will be completed to ensure you receive the best and most appropriate ongoing care. The assessment will include palpation of pulses and assessing the sensation in your feet using a 10g monofilament and vibratip. All testing is painless and will highlight any area of concern, treatment required and allow advice to be tailored to your needs. Diabetic assessments are carried out 6 monthly or annually depending on your status and you will be monitored closely to reduce the risk of foot related complications. If referred by your GP, a letter detailing the outcome of your assessment will be emailed to your GP surgery.
Comfort Podiatry will offer any advice necessary to help maintain mobility and improve the function of your foot where possible.
Advice will be tailored to your individual needs and written advice will be offered as a reminder to key points we have discussed.
Common topics often include diabetes, appropriate footwear to reduce falls risk, altered/reduced sensation in your feet, plantar warts, heel pain, tinea, ingrowing toe nails, skin integrity, varicose veins.

LOWER LIMB MASSAGE
Comfort Podiatry now offers lower limb massage as an additional service. Massage can relieve sore, tired muscles and stimulate the circulation which can become sluggish in older, less active people. Not only is massage therapy relaxing for you and your feet, it has also been shown to be of great benefit to patients who suffer with peripheral neuropathy which often results in tingling, burning and numbness in the feet. In these cases, patient have often noted a reduction in symptoms including pain and stress reduction in their limbs generally. Ask for details.

If you have a chronic medical condition you may be eligible for up to 5 Medicare visits in a calendar year as part of a Chronic Disease Management Plan. Examples include

THE SERIOUS STUFF
All instruments are reusable. After use, all instruments are washed by hand then again in an ultrasonic device, rinsed, dried and repacked, ready for sterilisation in a validated autoclave. All medical instruments used, are individually packed and following guidelines, are traceable back to a dated autoclave cycle - the cycle number and date of sterilisation is clearly visible on the instrument pack that will be used to treat you.
Every treatment uses a new pack of sterile instruments. The steriliser cycle number and date of sterilisation information is recorded in your confidential podiatry records.

As standard, a new disposable apron and gloves are used for every treatment and a face mask is worn when required. However, full PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is worn when advised and required by Queensland Government guidelines (as required during recent COVID outbreaks). Full PPE includes glasses, face mask, gloves and apron.

Shona has a current hand washing training certificate, practices safe aseptic techniques and follows all current safe clinical practises.

All confidential medical paperwork is stored securely as per guidelines.
